Hamish Duncan BVM&S CertSAM MRCVS

The Centre is owned and run by veterinary surgeon Hamish Duncan. Hamish qualified from Edinburgh University in 1997 and has worked in Halifax, Halesowen and most recently on the east coast of Fife in Scotland, before moving to Great Wyrley to set up his own independent practice. In 2004 he passed an additional specialist qualification - a Certificate in Small Animal Medicine (CertSAM). Certificates are post graduate examinations run by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and are the highest qualifications that vets can achieve outside specialist centres. Only 1 in 100 vets across the country has this qualification and level of medical expertise and Hamish is the only CertSAM holder locally. Hamish has a huge amount of experience from his years in practice and from working alongside other certificate holders as well as recognized specialists in orthopaedics and surgery.

Nicky Smith RVN

Nicky started as our qualified nurse when we first opened in 2007 and she remains our Head Nurse. She has worked in veterinary practice since 1992 and qualified as a veterinary nurse in 1996. In addition to nursing in several general practice posts, her work at a charity hospital and a dedicated emergency clinic, as well as a clinical supplies company and leading pet food manufacturer, has contributed to her invaluable experience.
Nicky holds many extra nursing qualifications including Pharmacy Management and Exotic Animal Nursing and she is a temperament assessor for Pets as Therapy. As well as offering behavioural advice for dogs and cats, she is very well qualified to advise on many aspects of pet care including looking after small pets (e.g. rabbits and guinea pigs) and managing diet.

In September 2010 Nicky started the Diploma for Advanced Veterinary Nursing at Harper Adams University – this is the highest Veterinary Nursing qualification currently available. Nicky continues to run a range of nurse consultations and health clinics at the practice.

Sharon Carter RVN

Sharon Carter

Sharon qualified as a veterinary nurse in 1999 but originally started nursing in a veterinary practice in Walsall in 1990, making her a very experienced and knowledgeable nurse. Sharon’s greatest strengths lie in running nurse clinics, including kitten, puppy and ‘six month’ checks, weight clinics, diabetes clinics and post-operative check-ups, where her experience and attention to detail is outstanding.
