Pet Smile Month

September is Pet Smile Month and we are offering free dental checks for all cats and dogs here at 387 Veterinary Centre. Dental disease is a welfare issue. ‘Dog’s breath’ is the very least of the worries. Oral pain is a feature – but often goes unnoticed because pets carry on eating. Pet Smile Month is a national initiative to raise awareness of dental disease in pet animals. Planning permission approved

We are delighted to announce that South Staffs Council has approved our plans to build a 13 place car park to the rear of practice and to extend the front of the building across part of the current car park to allow for a large waiting/reception area and 3 consulting rooms. Work will hopefully start towards the end of this year and into early 2011 and will improve our service for all our clients.

Pet of the Month – Max

Max was rushed to the surgery by his worried owners having been hit by a car. He was in considerable pain and shock so he immediately received intravenous pain relief and fluids. Once Max was stable we were able to radiograph his injuries, revealing a nasty compound (many pieces) fracture of his femur (thigh bone), with less serious fractures of his pelvis.

Because of the multiple pieces of bone involved in the fracture the repair combined an intramedullary pin (pin down the middle of the bone) ‘tied in’ to an external fixator (external frame) to give a strong and rigid support to the fracture pieces to allow healing. The most important aspect in achieving a successful fracture repair in these cases is to preserve the blood supply to all the individual pieces of bone, rather than achieving perfect re-alignment of the bone shaft. Max’s fracture healed very well and we removed the pin and frame 6 weeks later.

Luckily Max had received a microchip 2 weeks before his accident and the microchips that we use (Tracer Advance®) entitle owners to an automatic 4 weeks of free insurance from Pet Plan™. The owners were relieved to discover that their bill was therefore covered and now appreciate the importance of pet insurance!

Veterinary Nurse Week

We are pleased to support Veterinary Nurse Week – designed to highlight and promote the skills, knowledge and expertise of qualified Vet Nurses across the country. We are very lucky to have two extremely experienced qualified Veterinary Nurses, Nicky and Sharon, with a cumulative experience of over thirty years between them. The third member of our nursing team, Amy, has just completed the 1st year of her two year training as a student nurse. We are proud of the fact that we have no unqualified, unregistered ‘trainee nurses’ – an issue highlighted by Panorama.

We all had a womderful day at the wedding of our Head Nurse, Nicky Marshall, who now becomes Nicky Smith. Congratulations to both her and her new husband, Mark, and we wish them every happiness for many years to come.

Carnival Winners!

Thank you to everyone who came to speak to us at the carnival – we had a great day in the sun! We ran a parasite quiz with over 50 entries on the day and we are pleased to announce that the winners were Mr & Mrs Eley, Mrs Partridge and Mr Barnes, all from Great Wyrley. They all won 3 free months of Advocate to treat fleas, worms, mites and lice. Congratulations to all of you!

Carnival fever

Come and visit our stand at the Great Wyrley Carnival on Saturday afternoon, 26th June. We will be offering free dog checks and advice as well as running 2 competitions – guess the parasite to win one of 3 boxes of Advocate, and a dietary quiz with lots of prizes. We will also be microchipping dogs for half price – only £10. We look forward to seeing you there.

June is microchipping month!

June is the seventh National Microchipping Month. This simple, effective way of permanently identifying your pet means that they can be quickly reunited with you if they go missing. In support of National Microchipping Month we will be offering owners the chance to have their pets microchipped at half price during June, meaning it will be just £10 per pet. Microchipping clinics will be held on weekdays between 11am – 2pm and 3pm – 4pm. Chipping will also be available at the Great Wyrley Carnival on Saturday the 26th June from 1pm. Owners of pets already microchipped are also encouraged to bring their pets to the surgery to get their chips checked, and to ensure the details held on the database are up to date. Free rabbit health checks

387 Veterinary Centre in Great Wyrley is calling all rabbit owners to bring their rabbit along for a FREE health check during National Rabbit Awareness Week, running 26^th April – 2^nd May 2010. The health clinics are open to everyone and will provide free advice on how to keep rabbits happy and healthy, including information about feeding, environment, vaccinations and husbandry. In addition to the free health checks, rabbit owners will be given complementary information packs and free samples of rabbit food specially designed to provide a perfect daily balance of fibre and nutrients.

New nurse starts

Sharon is an extremely experienced nurse – she qualified as a Veterinary Nurse in 1999 but actually started nursing more than 20 years ago. We believe she will be a huge asset to our practice and improve the level of service we can offer.
